There have been others, however, who have said my work is old fashioned entertainment and "lacks impact on the social pressures and issues of today."
Let me put it this way. They’re absolutely right.
If I came across an old fashioned wooden soap box, I wouldn’t take it to the city park or the town square. I wouldn’t stand on it and preach at anyone passing by. I wouldn’t try to convince anyone to think the way I think, or vote the way I vote, or live their lives the way I’ve lived mine.
I’d probably attach a board to that old wooden box. I’d stick some wheels and a seat on it, and try to rig up a way to steer the thing. I’d slap some axle grease on the wheels and take it to the top of the longest, steepest, highest hill I could find . . . .
So, if you want someone to tell you how to live your life, fix your marriage, or explore ten ways to contribute to the societal relevance of the day - - you’re probably wasting your time and your money on my books.
. . . . If, however, you’d like to climb on the seat of that soap box racer with me . . . if you’d like to feel the wind slap at your face and experience the course surface of the asphalt as the vibrations move through the chassis until they shake your bones and rattle your teeth . . . .
Then you might want to pick up one of my books.
